Ford Investing in Argo AI to Help Create New Autonomous Vehicles

In addition to investing $200 million in a new wind tunnel complex, Ford is investing $1 billion over the next five years in a new artificial intelligence company called Argo AI. Ford says the partnership will allow them to strengthen their leadership in creating and bringing new autonomous vehicles to the Ford model lineup in the near future. The goal is to have the first Ford autonomous vehicle ready for release by 2021.

What is Argo AI and How Will They Help Ford Create an Autonomous Vehicle?

Argo AI is being founded by former Google and Uber leaders. The company will be staffed with roboticists and engineers from Ford and other companies with the goal of creating and developing a new software platform for the first full autonomous Ford model, which they hope to release by 2021.

“The next decade will be defined by the automation of the automobile, and autonomous vehicles will have as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago. As Ford expands to be an auto and a mobility company, we believe that investing in Argo AI will create significant value for our shareholders by strengthening Ford’s leadership in bringing self-driving vehicles to market in the near term and by creating technology that could be licensed to others in the future.” – Ford President and CEO Mark Fields.

What are Ford’s Autonomous Vehicle Plans?

As we’ve already mentioned a couple of times, Ford plans to release their first fully autonomous vehicle by 2021. But the fun isn’t going to stop there. Ford hopes to then expand its autonomous vehicle offerings to include commercial and ride-sharing vehicles, as well. As an added bonus, all of the work being done on autonomous vehicles by Ford and Argo AI will be completed in the United States, meaning the creation of at least 200 jobs, with more coming in the future.

In the meantime, you’re going to have to continue to drive yourself. But considering how impressive and fun-to-drive new Ford models are, that shouldn’t be a problem. And, as always, if you have any questions, just get in touch with our friendly Brandon Ford staff in Tampa, Florida.
