New and Improved Towing Ratings for the 2020 Ford Explorer

Over the course of its 25-plus year reign as the best-selling 3-row SUV in the United States, the Ford Explorer lineup has become known for many things – with unmatched power, unparalleled efficiency, outstanding capability, and dynamic handling being just a few of those things. But one thing the Ford Explorer lineups of yore were never really known for is towing prowess – not because they weren’t adequately capable, but because there was so much else to focus on. But just how much you can tow depends on which engine option you choose and which available packages you add. That’s because new 2020 Ford Explorer models featuring the 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine can tow up to 5,600 pounds, which just so happens to be a 12% increase over how much a 2019 Ford Explorer featuring a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine can tow. Furthermore, a 2020 Explorer featuring the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine and the Class III Trailer Tow Package can tow up to 5,300 pounds, which just so happens to be 2,300 pounds more than a 2019 Explorer with the same engine and package can tow.
