Ford electric bikes could change how we interact with our cars.

No not quite what you’re thinking, these are bicycles not motorbikes, weird right? Normally we tell you all about the new performance vehicles Ford has released, or about how much the Ford F-150 can tow. The announcement of this new form of Ford transportation comes around the same time as Ford has announced that they will have an electric vehicle that can travel 200 miles. So now we can have a Ford Electric car and Electric bike in Tampa.

Ford Focus ElectricThe idea with the bikes is for them to work with cars and other forms of transportation. This would be specifically interesting to try out with the Ford Focus Electric. There are currently two prototypes, the MoDe:Me and Pro. The best part is, they are able to charge while folded into a Ford vehicle. Yeah they fold to save space and they will always be ready for a ride.

They both provide electric pedal assist up to 16 mph, making it easy to get around without breaking out into a sweat. They’ll even have Mode:Link to provide navigation and other features you would expect to find in a vehicle’s infotainment system.

One of the most interesting aspects of the bike is that it can communicate with newer vehicles. The bike will use a rear-facing ultrasonic sensor so that it can tell you when there is a car behind you by vibrating the handlebars. The driver is similarly alerted by lights on the handlebars.

Though there are currently no plans to go to market, we would like to see it as part of a package with the new electric car that’s on it’s way. Instead of a spare tire in the trunk you could find a folded bike. If it is set to rival what’s already out there, this would be a good way to set it apart.

It remains to be seen if it will be a more juiced up version of the Ford Focus Electric or a completely new vehicle. Or bet and hope is that it will remain a Focus, the hatchback is perfect for a folded electric bike in the back.
