What Is the Future of Ford EVs?

We love the Ford brand here at Brandon Ford and we are excited for what the future holds. We have all gotten a glimpse at the future of the automotive world with the increased popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) and the debut of popular models like the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e and the 2022 Ford F-150 Lighting at Brandon Ford in Tampa, FL – but what is the future of Ford EVs? The recent news that Ford has trademarked the terms Ford Ranger Lightning and Ford Maverick Lightning gives us a hint at the future and we are here to take a closer look.

Ford Trademarks Ford Ranger Lightning and Ford Maverick Lightning

The Ford Ranger and Ford Maverick may be the next pickup trucks in line to add electric power to the spec sheet. The trademark of Ford Ranger Lightning and Ford Maverick Lightning nameplates is the first clue – but there are more. Next-generation 2023 Ford Ranger pickup trucks have been built with a future-forward design that allows more room for electrified powertrains under the hood. The 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid is already equipped with a hybrid powertrain and is halfway there – which makes it easier for the design team to electrify. The potential for an all-electric or plug-in hybrid Ford Maverick is very real and the Ford Ranger is ready to add electric power to its resumé.

You will want to keep an eye on the future of the Ford brand. Ford has dedicated significant resources and development to future EVs in the brand lineup and Ford CEO Jim Farley has stated that he expects to add electric power to more of its pickup truck options – which with the release of the Ford F-150 Lightning would point to an electric powertrain for Ford Maverick and Ford Ranger entries.

The news behind Ford electric vehicles does not end there. The success of the Ford Mustang Mach-e and Ford F-150 Lightning has led the Ford Motor Company to pledge a $3.7 billion investment in electric vehicle production at Michigan, Ohio and Missouri plants. This money is expected to be used to increase production of popular electric vehicles like the Ford Mustang Mach-e and the Ford F-150 Lightning and to outfit plants for the production of next-generation EVs.

Are you looking for more evidence? In a recent May 2022 press release, Ford Europe has joined an appeal to the European Union to ensure that all new cars, trucks and SUVs have zero emissions by 2035 – a pledge that is complemented by an expectation of nine additional all-electric vehicles in the Ford Europe lineup by 2024. We know that that is in Europe – but with more emphasis on electric power in the United States, you can expect some of those brand-new electric vehicles and the powertrains that drive them to arrive in the United States in the future.
